School’s almost out… so I’m already planning my summer reading!
I have been so inspired by all the Summer Reading lists people are posting that I have decided to share mine with you {organized by category, of course!}. I am sharing the Amazon links for these, but unlike the other books I share with you, I haven’t read these yet ~ so this is just my reading list, not a recommendation.
Fiction Reading
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty ~ I am intrigued by this story, set in 1922, of fifteen-year-old Louise Brooks and her respectable thirty-six-year-old chaperone in New York City. It must have been such an interesting time to be a woman in America, and this novel depicts the changes, and various reactions to those changes, in women’s lives.
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce ~ Retired Harold decides on a whim to walk the entire way from southern to northern Britain to visit a woman from his past. I’m about 20 pages in so far and am loving it!
And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini ~ I loved The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, and am looking forward to Hosseini’s latest release.
Mommy Reading
what it is is beautiful by Sarah Dunning Park ~ This one is from Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Summer Reading Guide. A collection of poems “about mothering small children.” I can’t write poetry, but I can relate to mom-life. I’m excited to savor this one!
The Mindful Child by Susan Kaiser Greenland ~ I’m eager to learn more ways to cultivate mindfulness with my children and as a parent.
Left Brain Buddha Reading
Daring Greatly by Brene Brown ~ I was introduced to Brene Brown in Liv Lane’s blogging e-course, and I think she is amazing. {Have you watched her TED talk? Definitely worth 20 minutes of your time ~ it’s one of the three most watched TED talks of all time!} After watching her speak, I felt like she totally got me. This is her latest book about vulnerability and courage, and transforming “the way we live, love, parent, and lead.”
May Cause Miracles by Gabrielle Bernstein ~ I keep seeing this one recommended over and over again. At first I dismissed it as being too “woo-woo” for me, but I think I’m becoming a bit “woo-woo” lately and I’m going to take the plunge with this one!
Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott ~ I am fascinated by spiritual journeys, and this one seems to be right up my alley.
History Teacher Reading
How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character by Paul Tough ~ This is the book for my teacher book group this summer.
Bring Up The Bodies by Hilary Mantel ~ I realize this one is fiction, but I am intrigued by the story of Anne Boleyn, Thomas Cromwell, and Henry VIII. I’ve heard so much about this one, and I have a feeling my students will be asking me in the fall, “Was this part true?” So it is research!
The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris by David McCullough ~ My husband’s copy of this book is all marked up and highlighted {a good sign!}. I love David McCullough’s work, and this book about Americans living and studying in Paris from 1830-1900 sounds fascinating.
I know this is an ambitious list! Reading is one of my favorite things to do ~ so I make it a priority. If you’re wondering how to find time for all the reading you want to do, check out this post from Crystal at Money Saving Mom about how she makes time for reading in her busy schedule {I am always amazed at how many books she reads!}.
What’s on YOUR summer reading list? I’d love to know!
