War and Peace and Friendship

peace

Ambitious title, no?

While I would love to offer you a comprehensive analysis on how to end war and establish peace and proclaim friendship for all, I feel that is a bit beyond the scope of one blog post!

In the spirit of “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” however, I will share with you a few lovely projects that aspire to create peace by ending the “Mommy Wars” and celebrating the power of women’s friendships.

I love that many mothers have come together to proclaim a truce in the Mommy Wars, and support ALL women in making informed choices about parenting. I especially love the Campaign for Judgement-Free Motherhood started by CT Working Moms, which has inspired many similar projects in which women proclaim their motherhood experiences, and honor those of other mothers.

I was therefore thrilled to be part of the launch of Margarita Mommies with the post “What Would Your Sign Say?” I joined several friends and bloggers in owning our motherhood choices and declaring our support for all mothers. Our signs don’t look quite as fancy, but remember, it’s about not judging. You can see our signs and our pleas for peace here.

I am also super excited to tell you about the publication of The HerStories Project: Women Explore the Joy, Pain, and Power of Female Friendship! The HerStories Project was created by Jessica Smock and Stephanie Sprenger to celebrate the joys and consider the challenges of women’s relationships. I am honored to be a contributor to the book they will publish in December ~ below is the description from the back of the book:

Female friendship is an extremely rich and complex topic. The bonds of women’s friendship can be more intimate than marriage, and just as essential to emotional health. From the childhood friend who broke your heart to the college roommate who witnessed you at your highest and lowest, from the lost friendship that ended bitterly to the devoted companion who is still in your life, from the bond that was forged due to shared grief to the shaky connection born with new motherhood, all women have stories to tell about their friendships. The HerStories Project: Women Explore the Joy, Pain, and Power of Female Friendship is a collection of essays from 50 women writers, encompassing tales from the sandbox to the inbox.

You can learn more about the book, and enter a giveaway to win one of two copies of the memoir She Matters: A Life in Friendships here. You can also sign up for the email list on the HerStories Project website to receive updates about the book.

Ending the Mommy Wars + Celebrating Friendships = Tiny Steps Toward Peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I hope I’m not the only one! 🙂
